Overview

Mountain View Primary School serves students in grades kindergarten through second grade. We are a school deeply committed to equity and “doing whatever it takes” to connect with our students and families so they are successful.

At Mountain View Primary School, we want our students to have safe, predictable, joyful and rigorous learning opportunities. Our school’s vision and mission are aligned with ACPS’ Strategic Plan, “Learning for All." All our students learn Spanish during the day, with the goal of biliteracy. We are one beautiful, inclusive, and diverse school family.

Mountain View's Mission

Our mission is for all students to achieve academic success to their best ability. We want all of our students to feel a sense of belonging, and experience and celebrate bilingualism, biliteracy, and multiculturalism.

Mountain View offers kindergarten through second-grade instruction for all students. In addition, we have two application-based "Bright Stars" preschool classes for 4-year-olds as well as an Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) program. Teachers work in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to support students in meeting the goals of the Albemarle County School Board, and the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs). Teachers follow ACPS Pacing Guides and deliver instruction in classroom that have a balance of academic and social/emotional needs. We encourage flexible grouping and students choice to create instruction that is differentiated for the needs of each student. 

Our History and Growth

For over three decades, our campus on Avon Street Extended has been a vibrant hub of learning, growth, and community for Albemarle County families. While our name and our footprint have evolved over the years, our core mission has always remained the same: providing a welcoming, inclusive, and exceptional educational experience for every child who walks through our doors.

• 1990: Our school originally opened its doors as Paul H. Cale Elementary School. It was constructed to serve the growing Southern feeder pattern, replacing the former Rose Hill Elementary School.
• 1998: As the surrounding neighborhoods blossomed, so did our student body! To accommodate our growing family, a new wing featuring six additional classrooms was built.
• 2007: We expanded again with the completion of a major two-story addition, providing our educators and students with even more space for collaboration and hands-on learning.
• 2020: In July 2020, our school was officially renamed as Mountain View Elementary School. The new name was selected after extensive community input to better reflect the beautiful natural landscape surrounding our campus, as well as our shared community values.
• 2026 and Beyond: To continue providing the best possible environment for our rapidly growing community, the Mountain View family is expanding into a two-campus model! With the brand-new Mountain View Upper Elementary School (serving grades 3–5) scheduled to open in August 2026, our original building will proudly transition into Mountain View Primary School, specializing in early childhood education for Pre-K through 2nd grade.
